Andrew Smith - Art
When Andrew Smith opened his art gallery-restaurant Sept. 2, a long time dream came true.
Smith the idea and concept of his place, Andrew ’s Natural Food Café, 703 Howard St., had been developing in his mind for many years. “It (the café) is designed for the struggling young artist,” he said. “The public is just beginning to grow aware of art; they are developing a perception as far as art is concerned. This place is designed to help the contemporary artist become known.”
A professional artist himself, Smith said he understands the red tape beginning artists have to cut through trying to find places to exhibit or perform. Smith said his gallery is “for all people.” When Smith speaks of artists, the category is not just limited to painters like him-self. Singers, musicians, poetry readers mime acts are also welcomed as are individuals wanting to exhibit sculptures, paintings, photography or other artwork. Currently some of his artwork is displayed.“All an artist has to do is come in ask for an audition time,” Smith said.
The Howard St. site was selected because Smith said he felt it was “one of the best locations” around. An Evanston residence for six years, Smith also said he found the “harvest was ripe” for his concept. “I don't see any real art galleries in Evanston,” he said. “I’m bringing something to an area that needs it.” The right atmosphere is something Smith has worked hard to achieve. He said he wants his customers to feel relaxed.
“I’m pressing toward a peaceful place where people can go any time of the day and anytime of the week to hear music,” he said. “ It is a place where people can come, have a good time and with art as a complement to good food.” The food at Andrew’s Café is not all vegetarian, Smith explained. Some customers had thought since Smith advertised “natural” food the menu consisted of all vegetarian entrees.
